In 1997, NIST called for an improvement to 3DES. The selected proposal was the Rijdael Cipher, now known as the
Advanced Encryption Standard (AES), this algorithm has an improved security over 3DES, and is more efficient.
It has the options for 128 / 192 / 256 bit keys, and can operate on 128 bit blocks.
